Alga Norte Park

Alga Norte Park

Thank you for your interest in Alga Norte Park (32 acres of Swim Complex, Ball Fields, Dog Park, Skate Park, and Trails).

The public is invited to show their support for Alga Norte Park by attending the Carlsbad City Council meeting, 1200 Carlsbad Village Drive, Tuesday, April 21st at 6:00 PM.

There will be "Alga Norte Now" stickers available for you to proudly display. You do not have to make a presentation to the council; your presence will speak volumes.

If you cannot attend, you may voice your opinion by e-mail to Council@CarlsbadCA.gov.

A brief history:

  • 1996 the Carlsbad City Council identified the need for a swimming pool and funded it with nearly $6 million in 1999.
  • 2002, the voters passed Proposition C, allowing the council to fund projects such as Alga Norte Park. In 2003 the council approved the park's master plan.
  • 2007, Council funded the project, placing about $50.4 million in a separate account.
  • 2008, Council became concerned with the economy and the ability to pay for the annual maintenance and operations cost of the park, which is estimated to be $1.12 million.
  • 2009, Council asked for an updated cost to build the project. The result was that, in our slowing economy, the cost of building Alga Norte Park had dropped to just under $40 million, which includes over $4 million in contingency costs. This leaves a surplus of $10.6 million.

I support the many residents who believe that this is the opportune time to build the Park at a lower cost, allowing the City to use the remaining $10.6 million to offset the annual maintenance and operations costs.

Tuesday night, city staff will present an update on Alga Norte Park. This is an opportunity for Carlsbad residents to voice their support for the park.
